Lady Gaga September Vogue Cover Review

The September issues are coming so I thought, fuck, why not review them? They're the most important issue for a magazine so why not judge?

US Vogue got Lady Gaga wearing a patchwork fuchsia gown by Marc Jacobs for their 120th anniversary cover. This is a great cover for US Vogue. I'm so used to seeing a portrait shot of an actress evoking Hollywood glamour, usually shot by Mario Testino. So bland. I recently picked up their May issue for six bucks with Scarlett Johansson and it's basic glamour is predictably boring.

My only criticism of the Gaga cover is the excessive air brushing and strange blue/purple tone to her face and hair. The red banner running through the mast head is a nice touch too.

The Australian Harpers Bazaar cover isn't awful but it's such a testament to the power of advertising. Louis Vuitton got the first pages of advertising for this issue so it would seem that also got them the cover. Constance Jablonski graces the cover in top to toe Louis Vuitton in arguably one of Jacobs' worst collections. Those fucking hats by Stephen Jones are a travesty. Dour, frumpy and outdated. The worst part though is the caption at the bottom: Constance Jablonski wears Louis Vuitton. I mean, what? This is the worst corporate branding I've seen in a while. Is it not enough that Louis Vuitton paid to get the cover but they presumably demanded a caption too. It's just too much and then they cap the whole cover off with the  statement 'The New Elegance' which makes me want to roll it up and use it to start a fire.

Haider Ackermann Spring Summer 2012 Review

Oh how deshabille, how French, so Fifth Arrondissement. No! just sloppy lesbian clothes

I don’t like Haider Ackermann. I can understand why people like his work but I think he’s overrated. His  spring summer show opened with tailored day suits in silk. So practical. He draped one side of a jacket, elongating the lapel and then tucked the other side into the pants. They were a nice, un-fussy opening but then he got carried away with his draping and yeah it’s his thing, I get that, but whatever. Meh.
The problem with Haider Ackermann is that his clothes aren’t extremely avant garde so it’s considered just ready to wear but it’s too avant garde for 'normal' people to buy. I don’t think that makes a lot of sense. Actually, Lady Gaga wearing one of his dresses on the cover of Vogue is the perfect summation of his work. Slightly avant garde to suit Lady Gaga but wearable enough for Vogue.

Magazine Drop

I think I'm pretty much over magazines. My pile that I keep is getting out of control and they're mostly full of shit editorials like the one from ID with Lady Gaga. Mint flares? Not on my watch bitch. But I do like the shoot with the rosette bra.

Vogue Australia have a post rave thing going on and Vogue Brasil I picked up in Rio as a souvenir. I know I can get it in AU but I needed to break a 100 note at the time so I could pay this guy for a handjob.

Maybe my magazine days are over. Have I blogged about this already? I bet I have.

Mugler. Sizzle and Fizzle

I'm still coming to terms with this collection. On the one hand I'm thinking you replaced Thierry Mugler? And then I think the collection is a total mess but on the other hand if I don't take it all so seriously then I'm okay with most of it.
I don't have any emotional ties to the creator of the house and I'm not familiar with his collections. I know his work but only the most widely photographed pieces like the bird of paradise dress or the motorcycle bustiers that wound up in a George Michael video. The major takeaway from Mugler's work is that it's sexually charged, masterfully tailored and also incredibly imaginative.

Nicolas Formichetti-a stylist by trade- is the creative director which is kinda like saying I'm not really a designer so if you hate my clothes then fine, I never claimed to be a designer in the first place. For a first effort though it was good only it lacked imagination and was too now. The outfits in blue were my favourite but I'm a sucker for blue.

A blemish free show at Acne...no wait...A spotless show at Acne...oh here's another...clean and clear for Acne

I loved this collection. I wasn't too hot on the leather jackets with the hem skimming belts. They somehow remind me of Lady Gaga who in turn reminds me of an 80's transgendered leather bitch. Not terrible, just not my cup of tea.
The shoes are beyond perfection. I love the nana socks too. Those silver brogues or whatever will somehow be mine....and somehow come in a men's size 10.

Lady Gaga's Born This Way Single Cover

This is the cover for Lady Gaga's new single Born This Way. I believe it was shot by Nick Knight. What struck me the most about this image is not her augmented face (this was done at Alexander McQueen's spring 2010 show). What's interesting to me is that she's not wearing any clothes. Of all the current pop stars Lady Gaga is a high fashion clothes horse so to see her wearing nothing is interesting to me because this is still a striking image. She isn't relying on Noritaka Tatehana hooves or spun sugar Armani dresses to jack up her persona.

Above: Alexander McQueen Spring/Summer 2010. One of his defining collections.

Roll On September

The September issues are rolling in. Lady Gaga channels Kristen Mcmenamy for British Vanity Fair (I think) and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley goes rockabilly for Love.

Gaga's Alejandro

I really don't know about this. Visually, stylistically, art-direction-wise etc it's flawless and you can't fault it. Without sounding too much like a paranoid weirdo I completely question Gaga's motivations for this video. I think she's pandering shamelessly to the gay community and it's like, why bother? A large proportion of her fans are gay guys anyway and they eat that high-fashion pop porn shit up (I should know).
And though the video is flawless the men look like they belong in a Madonna video 20 years ago. They're totally Steven Klein's (the directors) vision of what gay men like. Don't get me wrong, I'd let any one of those guys pound me but they're so 80's leather muscle daddy that it's cliche. Very dated cliche.

Also I find it funny that a lot of people are saying that's she's trying to be shocking and she's failing to. I really don't think she was trying to shock at all in this video. Eating rosary beads? Wearing a latex nun's habit? Men in high heels?

Fashion-wise a couple of outfits are Alexander McQueen. I wonder if they were designed by Sarah Burton, the new head designer?

Oh, my favourite part is at the end where the celluloid burns up on the image of her face. It's cool.
Anyway, that's just my half-assed 2 cents. Apologies for the lack of updates, I'm back from Japan and just found out we're being evicted from our flat so my biggest concern is finding a new dump to move into. Just quickly, Tokyo was beyond amazing. It's just....I don't know, there's so much to say about it. I actually did find the Prada building and went inside. The staff were curt but that was to be expected. The buidling was amazing, I think it was about 5 floors and there was a basement too. The menswear was hideous. The womenswear was cool. ok my eyes hurt, I have to go now. Toodles

BAD ROMANCE, SHAMELESS PRODUCT PLACEMENT

So by now you've all seen Gaga's AMAZING new video Bad Romance. Once I calmed the fuck down and got my heart rate back to normal I looked at the video more closely and was weirded out by all the product placement. I did a clip by clip thing below with deets on the goods...

Carrera sunglasses, these are around $140ish USD but thats ball-park. So not Gaga.
Is this a Wii remote? wtf. The sex pig dungeon body harness makes a nice juxtaposition y'all
Nemiroff Vodka. NEVER heard of it

OK this one is weird. The laptops are by fuck knows who but the B logo? That's Beats by Dr Dre, a headphone brand, the same one doing Gaga's Heartbeats.

Heartbeats by Gaga headphones, $120 USD

YAY McQueen heels from Spring 2010. Price? Just ur 1st born

Last but not least Parrot by Starck, a wireless speaker set, $1500
So um yeah you guys....go shopping!!!!
