Ungaro Owner Scouting For New Designer
Emanuel Ungaro ditched artistic adviser Lindsay Lohan after a well predicted disastrous first collection last October but now it would seem they're scouting for a new head designer. Since the founder retired in 2004 there's been countless designers hired and fired.
The owner-Asim Abdullah and his management team were spotted having lunch on Friday with English designer Giles Deacon at Le Relais Plaza on the Avenue Montaigne.
Ungaro has declined comment and Deacon could not be reached for comment (not by me, by WWD-duh).
I only feel bad for Estrella Archs, the current head designer because it must have been unbearable to work with with that mangy trail of cat sick Lohan. I mean, the bitch put pasties on the runway. However, Archs has had one season under her belt without the input of Lohan and it was still kinda shit. It lacked energy, vibrancy and French sex.
Abdullah has said his goal is to make the loss-making firm “sustainable” by 2011. Honestly, as much as I love Giles I just don't think he'll do anything for the brand. They need hype, not British quirk. Can you imagine if Alexander Wang or Proenza Schouler were hired? They might be totes wrong for the brand but they'd have editors clamoring. [WWD]
So I went to a strip club in LA and the strippers wore pasties and I was like that's so hot. So um yeah, that was my inspiration. You got any blow?-Lindsay Lohan

Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli replaced Alessandra Facchinetti after she was unceremoniouslydumped because Valentino felt she wasn’t referencing his archive enough. He said “There is an existing archive with thousands of dresses where they (Maria and Pier) can draw and take inspiration from to create a Valentino product that is relevant today. It is a shame that their predecessor didn't feel this need."
So it was a shame she didn’t see a need to tow the ruffled chiffon line. And now after a couple of seasons under their belts Maria and Pier have strayed into conceptual design territory, much like Faccchinetti only less successfully.
After their paint-by-Valentino-numbers spring RTW show it took my eyes a moment to adjust to what I was seeing. The models looked like they’d hitched a ride into Paris on the back of a Balenciaga truck via Burberry Drive, Ungaro Way and Rodarte Ave.
It wasn’t all bad but a lot of it was. Look 25 was pure tack. A red stripper dress with tiers of mini ruffles snaking around it that no doubt took 500 hours to make. It doesn't take a stretch of the imagination to see the seamstresses crying while making these outfits.
Look 32’s conception went something like this “omg we should totes do a column dress with multi-coloured tiers of chiffon but let’s do some of the tiers in clashing neon. Squeal!”
Then there was look 33, a hippie cape that looked like Matthew Williamson vomited all over it after a bad acid trip. Seriously you guys, it was hideous.
Pier said of the collection "We think that to keep a future in couture, it's necessary to bring a new customer who wants something cooler.” Though the collection was a mess they should be commended for being brave enough to step out from Valentino’s over-bearing shadow and overstuffed archive but they’ll need to try harder to get that new, young customer they’re after.
COPYCAT?
This is the November cover of Vogue Italia. I saw the earring and thought, hang on I've seen that somewhere.

Oh hey Lindsay and Estrella! That's right it's Emanuel Ungaro. So either the Vogue cover is using an Ungaro earring (yes, quelle horreur) or the earring is not and Lindsay saw an earring she liked and had it copied. Any thoughts?

WORST OF SPRING 2010
Erin Fetherston

Fetherston thought she'd do cutesy heart motifs for Spring. Guess who else did too?
Emanuel Ungaro

That's right, everyone's favourite meth-faced design extraordinaire Lindsay Lohan. She also did cutesy heart shaped silk purses studded with crystals. I'll save you the pain and won't post those little Valentines day clearance bin nightmares. Kidding! Here it is below...

EMANUEL UNGARO SPRING 2010
The Emanuel Ungaro spring collection designed by Estrella Archs and Lindsay Lohan as 'artistic adviser' was according to the press; embarrassing as a streaky orange fake tan, questionable, old-fashioned, tasteless, lacked finesse and my personal favourite, a train wreck. ButCEO Mounir Moufarrige got exactly what he wanted: press coverage.
The collection was hastily put together in just three weeks and it showed. Dresses were very simple and appeared poorly constructed. I feel sorry for Archs because she actually designs her own signature line which is very beautiful. Take a look here. It's interesting to see this particular collaboration get so much criticism where as others have merely slipped under the radar. Louis Vuitton invited Kanye West to design a range of shoes and no one batted an eyelid (except for me).
I think this type of collaboration is hilarious and a good antidote to serious fashion. It won't last either, it's not as though Lohan will be rubbing shoulders with Wintour, Jacobs, Elbaz et al, right?
